History & Achievements
History
Bihar was separated from the Bengal Presidency as a distinct province in 1912, with Patna as its administrative headquarters. Bihar and Orissa were initially constituted together, before Bihar became a separate province in 1936. After India became a republic, Bihar continued as one of India's major states and developed a parliamentary system based on elected representation. The Bihar Legislative Assembly traces its modern institutional history to the early twentieth century and has evolved through successive elected assemblies since independence. The present Bihar Legislative Assembly has 243 elected seats. The Assembly is responsible for state legislation, financial matters and oversight of the state government. Following the 2025 Assembly election and subsequent political changes in 2026, Samrat Choudhary became Chief Minister and heads the BJP-led NDA government. His government subsequently won the Assembly trust vote. Tejashwi Prasad Yadav serves as Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The opposition includes the RJD and other parties represented outside the governing coalition
Achievements
Bihar has played an important role in India's political and democratic history, with a long tradition of legislative institutions and electoral participation. The state is historically associated with ancient centres of learning and governance, including Nalanda, Bodh Gaya, Vaishali and the ancient Magadha region. Bihar's Legislative Assembly has maintained a continuous record of legislative proceedings and democratic institutions since the establishment of the modern provincial legislature. The state has also developed a broad network of elected institutions covering the Legislative Assembly, local government and other representative bodies.
