History
Janata Dal (United) was formally established on 30 October 2003 following the merger of the Janata Dal, Lok Shakti and Samata Party political streams. The formation was associated with leaders including George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar. The party describes its political principles around social justice, development, secularism and the upliftment of disadvantaged sections of society. Bihar became its principal political base, where it has played a major role in state politics and government formation. JD(U) became a major political force in Bihar under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. The party formed governments in Bihar beginning in 2005 and participated in different political alliances over subsequent years. Its political history includes periods of cooperation with the Bharatiya Janata Party and periods of alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and other parties. The party has also maintained a presence in national politics through members of Parliament and participation in the Union government.
