Bihar BJP Launches Statewide Campaign on Electoral Rolls Amid SIR Controversy

Patna, October 23, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a 15-day statewide campaign in Bihar to defend its position on electoral-roll revision and counter opposition allegations surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The campaign, titled “Loktantra Bachao, Bheedtantra Hatao” (Save Democracy, Remove Mobocracy), began on October 22 and will continue until November 5. The party plans to organise press conferences, rallies, foot marches, student interactions and youth dialogues across Bihar’s districts.
The campaign comes amid continuing political disagreements over the SIR process, with opposition parties raising concerns about alleged voter deletions and demanding accountability from the Election Commission. The BJP, meanwhile, has accused opposition parties of spreading misleading claims about the electoral-roll revision.
Sanjay Saraogi reviews campaign strategy
Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi finalised the campaign strategy after consultations with state office-bearers and district presidents. Bhikhubhai Dalsania, the party’s state organisation general secretary, is also involved in coordinating the programme.
Party leaders have discussed how to communicate the BJP’s position on electoral-roll accuracy, protection of voting rights, political accountability and the credibility of democratic institutions.
The BJP intends to extend the campaign beyond party meetings through district-level public outreach, media briefings, social media activity and interactions with students, young people and members of civil society.
The programme also includes the distribution of booklets and other publicity material explaining the party’s position on electoral processes.
SIR controversy remains at the centre
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has become a major point of disagreement between the BJP and opposition parties.
Opposition leaders have questioned whether the revision process could exclude eligible voters and have raised concerns about the reported deletion of names from electoral rolls. The issue has also featured in protests demanding action by the Election Commission and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The BJP has rejected the opposition’s allegations. Party representatives have argued that names removed from the rolls may include deceased voters, people who have shifted residence or individuals registered in multiple locations.
These explanations represent the party’s position in the political dispute. Questions about particular deletions and the eligibility of individual voters require examination of the relevant electoral records and official procedures.
Rallies, student dialogues and social media outreach planned
The BJP’s campaign includes several forms of public engagement intended to communicate its position across the state.
Planned activities include:
Press conferences and public rallies in districts across Bihar.
Foot marches and meetings with intellectuals and civil society groups.
Youth dialogues and student-focused programmes.
Social media campaigns and influencer outreach.
Distribution of publications, booklets and promotional material.
The party has also indicated that the campaign will address national unity, social harmony, women’s rights and constitutional values alongside electoral-roll issues.
The programme is intended to establish a coordinated message across district units while giving party representatives opportunities to respond publicly to opposition criticism.
Opposition criticism continues
Opposition parties have maintained that the electoral-roll revision raises questions about voter inclusion and the transparency of the electoral process. Their criticism has focused on the potential consequences of deletions for eligible voters and the need for safeguards against errors.
The BJP’s campaign represents an organised political response to those allegations. However, the claims made by either side should be assessed separately from verified information about individual voter records, the official revision process and any findings by election authorities or courts.
The debate has consequently expanded beyond the technical process of updating electoral rolls to include broader questions about public confidence in elections and the accountability of political institutions.
A wider political communication effort
The campaign also gives the Bihar BJP an opportunity to mobilise its district-level organisation around an issue that has generated political debate nationally.
By combining public meetings, media outreach and digital communication, the party aims to present its position directly to voters. Whether the campaign changes public perceptions of the SIR process will depend on the information presented, the responses from opposition parties and the handling of concerns raised by affected voters.
The campaign is scheduled to continue until November 5. During this period, electoral-roll accuracy, voter eligibility and the credibility of democratic institutions are expected to remain prominent subjects of political discussion in Bihar.
Editorial note: This article distinguishes the BJP’s stated position from the allegations raised by opposition parties. Claims concerning wrongful voter deletions should be verified against official electoral records and relevant findings before being presented as established facts.
