Bihar CM Surveys Flood-Hit Areas as Gandak Embankments Are Damaged

PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in West Champaran and Saran on Wednesday, as officials reported damage to Gandak river embankments at several locations.
The survey followed heavy, short-duration rainfall in Nepal’s Gandak basin. The State Water Resources Department warned that low-lying areas could be inundated and local connectivity disrupted.
CM reviews flood relief
Choudhary surveyed Bagaha, Bathna in Bairia block, Machhargawan in Yogapatti block, and Shivrajpur, Bankatwa and nearby areas in Nautan block of West Champaran. In Saran, he inspected the damaged embankment near Haizalpur in Maker block.
He later visited a flood relief camp at PM Shri Government Plus Two High School in Bathna. He reviewed arrangements for community kitchens, medical aid, drinking water, sanitation, accommodation and livestock care, and served food to residents.
The Chief Minister also inspected a temporary Anganwadi camp, spoke with children about their studies and facilities, and reviewed medicines and treatment available at the medical camp. He met flood-affected residents and directed officials to address their concerns promptly.
Officials report embankment damage
Water Resources Department officials said a roughly six-metre section of the Bandhauli-Sheetalpur-Faizullahpur zamindari embankment near Sheetalpur village in Gopalganj’s Baikunthpur block breached around 6 a.m. on Wednesday. They warned that low-lying areas of Parsouni, Sheetalpur and Pakhan villages could be flooded. The department said the main Saran embankment remained intact.
In Saran, an approximately eight-metre stretch of the right Saran embankment near Haizalpur village in Maker block subsided overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing water to spread into nearby areas. Officials warned that low-lying parts of Haizalpur, Parmanand Chhapra and Naukaraha could be inundated.
The department said the Ganga was also flowing above the danger mark, adding pressure on embankments. Teams were working with district administrations to address seepage and piping reported at several locations.
Earlier, two sections of the Champaran embankment along the Gandak’s left bank were damaged at Khairatwa in Bagaha-1 and Phuliyakhad in Bairia on Tuesday night.
